Sinus Lifts

Smile Savers Dentistry Offers a Variety of Services to Help You Achieve a Confident Smile.

Smile Savers Dentistry is a dental practice where Dr. Anuja Patel, our team of experienced dentists, and the entire staff are committed to comprehensive dental care. This includes advanced procedures such as sinus lifts. This guide will explain what sinus lifts are, why they are performed, their benefits, and how Smile Savers Dentistry can help you achieve optimal dental health and confidence with this procedure.

Understanding Sinus Lifts

The sinus lift is also called sinus augmentation. It is performed to increase bone density in the upper jaw. This procedure is most commonly used in the area around the premolars and molars. This procedure is usually necessary when the upper jaw lacks sufficient bone height to support a dental implant.

Why Choose Smile Savers for Your Dental Implant Procedures?

Our general and cosmetic dentistry practice has been serving local patients since 1989, and we go the extra mile to save smiles. This often means we arrange earlier hours for those with extensive treatment plans and take on dental emergencies. We value our patients and want them to look forward to coming back. We also have the best MD dentist, Dr. Daniel Stewart, who has been taking excellent care of Columbia smiles for 30 years and counting.

If you’re in need of dental implants in Columbia, MD or the surrounding areas, there’s no better place to get them than at Smile Savers Dentistry.

Why Sinus Lifts are Performed

Sinus lifts can be performed when the natural bone structure has been compromised by tooth loss, periodontal diseases, or anatomical conditions such as the location of the sinus cavity. Sinus lifts, which involve lifting the membrane of the sinus and grafting bone material into the area, create a stable base for dental implants. This allows patients with insufficient bone structure to successfully undergo implant placement.

Sinus Lifts: Benefits and Uses

  • Increased Bone Density: Sinus lifts increase bone density in the upper jaw. This provides a stable base for dental implants. This will ensure the success and stability of your dental restorations for a long time.
  • Enhance Aesthetics: By restoring the bone volume of the upper jaw, sinus lifts can improve facial contours. This results in a youthful, harmonious appearance.
  • Preserve Facial Structure: A sinus lift can preserve facial structure by preventing bone loss around the sinuses. This helps to prevent the appearance of sunken or prematurely aged cheeks.
  • Long-Term Dental Health: Dental Implants placed in a sinus that has been properly augmented have a greater success rate. They are also less likely to suffer complications, such as implant failure and bone resorption. This leads to better oral health and longer-lasting dental restorations.
  • Functional Restoration: Patients who undergo sinus lifts will enjoy improved chewing, speech clarity, and overall dental functions. This is due to the increased bone density and stabilization. This results in a more functional and comfortable bite.
  • Customized Treatment: Sinus Lifts can be customized to meet the individual goals and needs of each patient. Dr. Patel will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that addresses your concerns and provides optimal results, whether you only need a sinus lift or require a more complex procedure.
  • Minimally Invasive: Sinus lifts are minimally invasive, and there is usually little discomfort or downtime. The procedure allows most patients to return to normal activity within a few weeks.
  • Confidence Boost: Patients who undergo sinus lifts will experience an increase in self-esteem and confidence. With confidence in their dental restorations, they can smile, speak, and eat with ease.
  • Long-term Value: Although sinus lifts require an initial investment, they provide a reliable and durable solution to replace missing teeth. Dental implants that are placed after a sinus lift can last for a lifetime with proper maintenance. They are a great investment for your oral and overall health.

Smile Savers Dentistry offers a Sinus Lift Process

Dr. Patel will conduct a comprehensive consultation before you undergo a sinus lift. During your appointment, Dr. Patel evaluates your oral health and discusses your treatment goals. She will also determine if a nasal lift is right for you.

Detailed Treatment Plan: Dr. Patel creates a detailed treatment plan based on your needs and preferences. This plan will detail the steps of the sinus lift, along with any other treatments or procedures you may need.

Pre-Surgery Instructions: Dr. Patel provides detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery before you undergo the sinus lift. You may be asked to fast before surgery and temporarily stop taking certain medications which can increase the risk for bleeding or complications.

Surgery Procedure: The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, to ensure that you are comfortable throughout. Dr. Patel makes a small cut in the gums in order to gain access to the sinus cavity. He then gently lifts the sinus membrane in order to make room for the bone graft material.

Bone Graft Material Placement: After the sinus membrane has been lifted, Dr. Patel places the bone graft into the space above the upper jawbone. The bone graft can be taken from you, a donor, or synthetic material depending on the individual needs.

Suturing and Healing: After placing the bone graft, Dr. Patel sutures the incision and gives you instructions on how to care for yourself post-operatively. Follow these instructions carefully to prevent complications and promote healing.

Post-Procedure Instructions: After the procedure, you might experience swelling, discomfort, and minor bleeding. Dr. Patel may prescribe antibiotics or pain medications to manage discomfort and prevent infection.

Follow-Up Appointments: Dr. Patel schedules follow-up appointments in order to monitor the healing process and ensure that your bone graft material integrates properly with your own bone. These appointments are crucial for determining whether the procedure was successful and the next step in your treatment plan.

Plan for Dental Implants: Once your healing is complete, Dr. Patel and you will develop a customized treatment plan to restore your smile using dental implants. It may also include additional procedures, such as implant placement or crown fabrication, to complete the smile transformation.

Support and Care: Dr. Patel, our team, and Smile Savers Dentistry are here to provide you with high-quality support and care throughout your journey. We are here to answer your questions and concerns and make sure you're comfortable and confident during the entire procedure.

Recovering After a Sinus Lift

It's not uncommon to experience minor swelling, discomfort, and bleeding after the sinus lift. Dr. Patel provides you with specific post-operative instructions that will help to manage discomfort and promote healing. To ensure a successful recovery, it's important to adhere to these instructions and to attend all appointments.

The bone graft will gradually integrate with your bone, creating a solid foundation for the placement of dental implants. After the healing process, Dr. Patel and you will develop a customized treatment plan to restore your smile using dental implants.
